When thinking about where I am in my career with teaching and coaching, I think that I have a different perspective on networking then a fresh college graduate or job seeker. To me, networking now is more about connecting with like-minded individuals to learn from each other. I think of the networking that is going on with my classmates, and how we are connecting over common classes. I also think of the coaches that I meet at track meets and field hockey games, and how we can connect over our coaching strategies and athletes.
I think that networking for current employed professionals can be used as a way to connect versus as a way to market themselves. I see the need to market as a new professional, and I do think that the many online networking and social media sources that are available to us can be used as a tool along with face to face interactions.
Networking in 2015 should be a combination of online connections as well as face to face connections made at conferences, events, interviews, and at places of common interest. By utilizing the programs and technologies that we have to network, we can continue to improve and gain knowledge as professionals. Just like our personal web presence should be professional, the way that we present ourselves while out in the public eye when networking should be professional. Employers, or other professionals that we may chose to try to connect with should be able to grasp a strong idea of who we are and what our interests and strengths are through our online presence. Through face to face networking, confidence, passion, and the ability to communicate effectivelely should be the main focus, as anyone can create a strong online presence, but not all can clearly communicate competence.
