I have found my next Christmas present! The Fitbit Surge is a touchscreen watch that tracks heartrate, daily activity and caloric expenditures associated with the activity, steps, sleep patterns, and provides GPS for running distance and routes. The Fitbit Surge also allows wearers to print out daily summaries of activity and fitness patterns so that you can monitor your levels.
This technology could be so useful in physical education, but it's price tag is prohibitive for use in the classroom. I think that if physical educators had a few of them, that it would be a useful assignment to have each student wear one for one week and keep track of their fitness and wellness for the week to make them aware of their heart rate, physical activity levels, and sleep patterns. I think that this technology combined with an app measuring caloric intake would be great for student's so that they could understand how their caloric intake corresponds with their activity level.
Pros are it's capabilities, the nifty touch screen, and wristwatch size. The cons that I can think of is that it doesn't have a dietary component, and that it is an expensive gadget for practical classroom use.
